Mr. James J. Mixon (January 30, 1945 ~ April 2, 2015) of Hwy 160, Westville, Florida passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015. He was 70.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015, in the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Marvin Phillips and Rev. Dale Paul officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continue until service time.
James was born January 30, 1945, in Holmes County, Florida to the late Millard and Lillian Medley Mixon. He attended Prosperity Elementary School and later graduated from Ponce de Leon High School. After 40 years of service as a highway and bridge inspector he retired from the Florida State Department of Transportation. He was certified in Nuclear Surface Moisture, Density Gauges, ACI Concrete Field Testing, Asphalt Paving and Plant Technician, Earthwork Density Inspecting, Work Zone Safety Specialist, Non DC Personnel Supervising offenders, Maintenance of Traffic Intermediate Level and I, II, III, Construction Inspector. He enjoyed family time, farming, fishing, hunting and camping.
In addition to his parents his father and mother-in-law, Alcus and Myrtle Harrison Slaughter, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Slaughter Mixon of Westville; three daughters: Diane Mixon Barnett of Ft. Walton Beach, Joyce Mixon (Randy) Kersey of Ponce de Leon, Brenda Mixon (Steven) Miller of Defuniak Springs; adopted son, Holit Barnett; grandchildren: Joshua Mixon Kersey and Faith Lynn Kersey both of Ponce de Leon, James Steven Miller, Seth Eugene Miller and Brandon Jedidiah Miller all of Defuniak Springs; two brothers: Charles Donald (Dawn) Mixon of Freeport, Roy Gene (JoAnne) Mixon of Ft. Walton Beach; nephews and nieces: Brian Mixon, Tonya Mixon, Elaine Holmes Stafford, Rex Earl Holmes, Peggy Holmes Stanton and Hope Harrell (Durwood Harrell, deceased); best friends: Marvin Phillips, Jimmy C. Landers, Jerry Burgess, Douglas Holmes, and Jeff Landers (deceased); other extended family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Flowers Hospital, Geneva Nursing and Rehab, Noland Hospital, Walmart Pharmacy and Gilstrap Drugs in Geneva, Dothan Ambulance, Gentiva Hospice and Regina Terry.
