James Layton “Jim” Powell, a resident of Dothan, died Tuesday, September 5, 2023. He was 78.


A private service will be held at First United Methodist Church Parlor on Thursday, September 7, 2023 with Dr. David R. Saliba officiating.  Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Scott and Alyson Powell, 120 Village Lane in Dothan at 5:00 p.m.  


Mr. Powell was born November 21, 1944 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Jessie and Christine Layton Powell. He was a 1963 graduate of Dothan High School and attended Auburn University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1967. He owned and operated Dothan Industrial Hardware for 46 years prior to his retirement. Mr. Powell was very active in the Dothan Botanical Gardens and the United Way Food Bank.


He is predeceased by his wife, Linda Ricketts Powell, his parents, J.M. and Christine Powell and his mother and father-in-law, Tommy and Ruth Ricketts.


He is survived by two sons, Scott Powell (Alyson) and Kelly Powell (Amy), all of Dothan; grandchildren, Dyllan Powell (Michelle), Rhaegan Powell, Grace Marie Powell (Kamryn Faria), Zack Powell, Davis Powell and Cooper Powell; great-grandchildren, Hadley Kate Powell and Ashby James Powell and a brother, Mac Powell (Donna) of Ft. Payne, AL.


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Wiregrass Angel House, P O Box 7133, Dothan, Alabama 36302.
