James Merryman Gregg Jr., (Jim) a resident of Dothan, AL, passed away at his home on November 7, 2023 after a long illness, surrounded by his wife and daughters.


His memorial service will be held at Cloverdale Methodist Church, next Friday, November 17, 2023 at 3:00pm with Ernie Gray officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing.


The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00pm-2:45pm at the church in The Gathering Room.


Jim was born on July 21, 1944 in Bristol, Virginia. He was raised in Nashville, TN, graduating from East High School in 1962.  He attended Carson Newman College and graduated from Belmont College in 1966.  After many years in Chemical Sales, he felt a calling to serve the Lord through Music.  At that time, he attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 1980 with his Master’s in Church Music.  Jim continued his sales career while passionately serving in multiple churches over his 50 year career as Minister of Music including First Baptist Trussville AL, Charlotte Road Baptist TN, Grassland Heights Baptist TN, Haywood Hills Baptist TN, Temple Baptist TN, First Baptist Columbia TN, South Walton First Baptist FL, and Cloverdale Methodist AL.  Jim also served for many years volunteering with the Davidson County Rescue Squad in Nashville, TN.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and recently great grandfather.  He lived a joy-filled life as a faithful servant to Jesus, his family, community and loved nothing more than a day at the beach.


He is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. James Merryman and Pansy Louise Gregg, Sr.


Survived by wife, Mary Sue Gregg; Brother, Bill (Penni) Gregg; Daughters, Jennifer (Lance) Pickler Bement, Christina (Stephen) Funderburke; Grandchildren, Johnny (Kaitlyn) Pickler, James (Ashley) Pickler, Trey Funderburke and Alyssa Funderburke; Great Grandchildren, Caden R. Pickler and Delaney Louise Pickler; Nephew, Billy (Lisa) Gregg; Former wife, Beverly Gregg Carmack.


The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to Gentiva Hospice for the compassionate care given to their loved one.


A Memorial Service Reception for family and friends in Tennessee will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home – Gregg Activity Center, 1310 Franklin Road, Brentwood, TN 37027.
