A celebration of James's life will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jim Hill officiating. James will be laid to rest with military honors in Sunset Memorial Park, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country and his community with honor and distinction. Friends and family are invited to gather one hour before the service at the funeral home to share memories and celebrate the man who touched so many lives.
James Nelson Watson, known affectionately as Jimmie to his friends and family, embarked on his final journey on October 5, 2024, in Ozark, Alabama, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on April 4, 1949, in Chico, California, James's zest for life and his unwavering spirit and love of God were apparent from the start.
James's early years out West were filled with the simple joys of childhood, but his sense of duty and patriotism led him to join the US Army as a young man on his seventeenth birthday. During his service, which included time spent in Vietnam and Germany, he displayed the courage and dedication that would become his hallmark. After retiring from the military, he settled in Ozark in 1981.
James's life was a testament to love in action. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Mary "Suzie" Watson, and a loving father to his children, James Leroy Watson and Mary Jo (Michael) Dotson. His heart also encompassed his grandchildren, Tucker Watson, Clint Devine, Anna Devine, Carter Devine, Casey Dotson, and Rachael (David) Walden, as well as his great-grandchildren, Aiden Watson and Tatum Walden. His sisters, Bessie Lee Wyatt, Jenny Lynn Morton, and Terri Helton, will remember him as the courageous brother who always led by example.
James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Jesse Watson, and by his devoted wife of 49 years, Sarah Nell Watson, who stood by his side as a true partner in life, sharing laughter, dreams, and countless cherished memories. Their bond was a testament to enduring love, a beacon that shone brightly for their family and friends. James was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Misty Sue Watson Devine, whose memory he always kept close to his heart.
James's life was a reflection of his deepest values. A man of faith, he was a regular at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, where he found great joy and solace in his love for Jesus and his church community. His outgoing personality was a beacon of light, welcoming all who crossed his path with a warm smile and a kind word.
An avid lover of the outdoors, James found peace and contentment in the beauty of nature. His yard and flowers were a source of pride and joy, and he tended to them with the same care and attention he devoted to every aspect of his life. His yard was more than just a patch of land; it was a canvas where he painted the beauty of his soul.
James's character was the epitome of courage, love, and friendliness. He met life's challenges head-on and always emerged with a positive outlook, inspiring those around him to do the same. "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear," as once stated by Ambrose Redmoon. James lived by this creed, showing us all that love, family, and faith are the cornerstones of a life well-lived.
Let us remember James Nelson Watson not with sadness, but with a sense of joy for the time we had with him. His life was a journey of love, courage, and friendship—a journey that does not end with his passing, but continues in the hearts and memories of all who were blessed to know him. James's story encourages us to live fully, love deeply, and laugh often, leaving a legacy of joy and kindness for generations to come.
