James O. Culbreth


 


James O. Culbreth, a resident of Montgomery and formerly of Dothan, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2011 in Montgomery. He was 76.


 


Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 11, 2011 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Edward L. Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery (Columbia) with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:45 until 10:45 on Friday prior to service time.


 


Mr. Culbreth was born August 24, 1935 in Columbia and lived the early years of his life there. He was a graduate of Houston County High School and Auburn University where he received a BA in agriculture. He served in the U.S. Army for two years as a Lieutenant.


 


Mr. Culbreth began his career as a salesman with Swift and Company. He was promoted to district sales manager in Montgomery and then served as Vice-President in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1998, he along with other investors, purchased Tri-State Plant Food in Dothan where he served as President for over 20 years.


 


Mr. Culbreth enjoyed golf, college football (especially Auburn) and Braves Baseball.  He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Dothan.


 


Mr. Culbreth is preceded in death by three brothers, John French Culbreth, Bunyon Culbreth and Edward Culbreth, Jr. and his parents, Edward and Ollie Mae Webb Culbreth.


 


He is survived by his wife, Gloria Jacobs Culbreth of Montgomery; his children, Perry (Natasha) Culbreth, Montgomery, Andy (Debbie) Culbreth, Montgomery, Blair (Stephanie) Culbreth, Pelham, Clark Culbreth, Montgomery, Joel (Melissa) Culbreth, Headland, Angel (Erich) McAlister, Montgomery; grandchildren, Perry and Skylar of Montgomery, Shannon and Jacob of Montgomery,  Kelsey and Kirsten of Pelham, Sydney and Joshua of Montgomery, Dalen and Cody of Headland, and Jake McAlister of Montgomery;  two sisters, Betty Culbreth of Columbia and Francis Odom of Dothan; four brothers, Frank (Jenny) Culbreth of Dothan, Gerald (Linda) Culbreth, Jacksonville, FL, Rudy (Lynette) Culbreth of Dothan, Tom (Ginny) Culbreth of Jacksonville, FL; brother-in-law,  John (Nori)  Jacobs, Apollo Beach, FL; several nieces and nephews.



 


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Fund of Alabama, 2400 John Hawkins Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35244.
