James Oliver Rye, age 91, of Dothan, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2016.
Born October 16, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN to the late James A. and Esther Viola Pickens Rye, James served his country first in the United States Coast Guard in World War II. He also served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and Vietnam War and served in the Navy until his retirement as a Lieutenant Commander. He enjoyed making furniture and was a woodturner. James enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and backpacking, doing trail maintenance for the American Hiking Society, canoeing, and white water. He also enjoyed square dancing and working with agility dogs.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Stanley Rye and Floyd Rye.
He is survived by his wife, Nevada Steward Rye; his daughter, Linda Rye Benard (Lucette); his son, Gordon Dean Rye (Donna Marie); his step-daughter, Tammy Penning (Greg); his step-sons, Jack Ingram (Jackie) and Scott Ingram (Marie); his sister, Janet Goodrich; his grandchildren, Mei-Jing Benard, Yi-Shan Benard, Dillan Rye, Dean Rye, Danielle Rye, Erin Penning, Kevin Penning, Katelyn Ingram, Jackson Ingram, Paige Hamm, Parker Hamm, Jonathan Ingram, Brianna Ingram, Ani Adams, Conner Adams, and Owen Adams; his nephew, Ted Tingdale (Penny); other relatives, Susanna Ingram and Debbie Ingram Hamm.
Funeral services will be held at 4 PM, Friday, October 28, 2016 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Doug Seale officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 PM until 4 PM, one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Wiregrass Food Bank or Wiregrass Humane Society.
