OZARK. . .James Rayburn “Ray” Preston, a resident of Ozark, died Thursday afternoon, August 10, 2017, in a Dothan hospital. He was 78.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, August 12, 2017, in the Mt. Enon Baptist Church, near Midland City, with Dr. Max McKinney and Reverend Jim Corley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 291, Ozark, AL 36361.
Mr. Preston was born and reared in the Preston Mill Community in Dale County, son of the late Joseph W. Preston and Etta Lee Harrell Preston. He was a 1957 graduate of the Midland City High School where he excelled in football. Mr. Preston was a member of the New Life Community Church where he also served as Pastor. He served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Lay Speaker, Music Director, and Pastor. He was the owner and operator of the Ray Preston Insurance Agency in Dothan.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Vivian Woodham Preston; a daughter, Melissa Turner (Russell), Dothan; a son, Jeff Preston (Andrea), St. Simons Island, GA; a sister, Yvonne Thomley (Max), Pinckard; a brother, Bill Preston (Ann), Gainesville, Florida; four grandchildren, Ryan Turner, Kaitlin Turner, Jarrod Preston and Joel Preston; a sister-in-law, Sue Fisher (David), and brother-in-law, Edward Woodham (Elaine); his beloved canine friend, Harley.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Preston Thomley, Ben Thomley, Joey Thomley, Eddie Smith, Josh Fisher, and Ethan Fisher.
