James Terry Seymour, a life-long resident of Dothan, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at his home after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 87. A worship service in his memory will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, September 27th at First Freewill Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Trail and Dr. Mike Pearson officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends in the chapel of Ward Wilson Funeral Home on Friday, September 26 from 5:30 until 8:30 P.M.


Mr. Seymour was born May 17, 1927 in Dothan, Alabama to the late Tarlton T. and Mattie Earl Seymour. He graduated from Dothan High School in 1945 and went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the 168th Army Ground Forces Band. He later graduated from Troy State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in History.


Mr. Seymour retired from Davis Dyer Supply Company at the age of 84. His career in industrial supply sales included partnership in Alabama Bearings, Inc. Mr. Seymour loved his work and was beloved and respected by his customers in the Tri State region.


He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Dothan where he faithfully served as music director for 14 years, was a deacon and taught Sunday School. Mr. Seymour was also a long time member and music director of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church in the 50s and 60s where he shared his enthusiasm for praising God through music. His gifts and talents in music included being an accomplished tenor vocalist, trombonist, conductor and teacher. Throughout his life he was a member of a variety music organizations including the Wiregrass Community Band, Troy University Choral Society, a Dixieland band, and barbershop quartet. He loved a variety of music genres from grand opera to the Grand Old Opry and there were few community music events or concerts that he missed. Among his other interests were traveling, camping and motorcycle riding.


In addition to his parents, a sister-in-law, Carolyn “Pat” Seymour and a brother-in-law, Glen Perdue, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Lynn Smith Seymour; one daughter, Jennifer Seymour Tompkins (Kelvin) and two precious grandchildren, Jack and Sara Katherine Tompkins, all of Dothan; a step-grandson, Jeremy Borden of Mobile; one brother, Wallace Seymour and two sisters, Winifred Seymour Mitchell (Warren) and Betty Seymour Perdue, all of Montgomery; three nieces: Patricia Seymour LaVie (Jon) of Cartersville, Georgia, Janet Seymour and Teri Lynn Mitchell both of Montgomery; one nephew, Jeffrey Seymour of Montgomery and a special mother-in-law, Virginia Smith of Dothan.


Serving as pallbearers will be the men of Mr. Seymour’s Sunday School Class. The family would especially like to thank the caregivers and friends that helped care for Terry during the past year. Memorial contributions can be made to the music ministry of First Free Will Baptist Church (1461 Timbers Drive, Dothan, AL 36303) or the building fund of Greystone United Methodist Church (4401 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36305).
