James Virgil (J.V.) Lewis, 101, of Dothan, passed away peacefully at his home on December 24, 2020 surrounded by his loving son and daughter.
J.V. was born February 8, 1919 in Houston County, Alabama. During his early adulthood he worked in various CCC camps throughout Houston County. In August 1941, he joined Company F 318th Infantry of the United States Army and fought proudly for his country in World War II. He earned numerous service medals during his military campaign in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. Most notably, he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Battle Star after he was wounded in action on February 12, 1945.
After being honorably discharged from the Army, he returned to his home and later married Virginia Jean Lewis on October 4, 1946; a union that lasted 74 years until her death in August 2020.
He was employed as a mechanic with Solomon Chevrolet for 30 years where he was well known for his exceptional work ethic and dedication to helping others. During his retirement years, he enjoyed fishing and trips to Florida with his beloved wife, Jean.
He is survived by a son Donny Mac (Cherry) Lewis, a daughter Wanda Lewis, grandchildren Jonathan (Amy) Armstrong of Daphne, AL, Donna Grijak, Melissa (Zeb) Owens, and Valarie (Jamie) Smith. Great grandchildren Grace and Jack Armstrong, Jeremy (Annie) Lewis, Garrett and Sarah Dasinger, Shelby and Gray Smith. Great-great grandchildren Amelia and Charleigh Lewis.
He is predeceased by his wife, Virginia Jean Lewis and his mother, Nannie Lewis.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Doug Seale officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service. Flowers are being accepted.
