SHORTERVILLE…James W. Fleming, Sr., a resident of Shorterville, died early Friday morning, September 7, 2018, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was 90.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, September 9, 2018, in the Old Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Winford O. Gulledge and Reverend Matthew Quincey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of the arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Old Zion Baptist Church, c/o John R. Starling, 480 County Road 36, Shorterville, AL 36373.
Mr. Fleming was a lifelong resident of the Sandy Bottom Community of Henry County, son of the late William Curtis Fleming and Ola Odell Moring Fleming. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Fleming retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in the Abbeville Unit with the rank of Staff Sergeant after thirty-three years of service. He also retired from Shelley Construction Company as a carpenter. In earlier years, he was engaged in farming. He was self-employed as a cattle farmer most of his adult lifetime. Mr. Fleming was a member of the Old Zion Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Fleming was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Mae Fleming.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Genara Hartley Fleming; a daughter and two sons, Dell Marie McPherson (Joel), Toby Fleming (Linda) and Curt Fleming (Kendra), all of Shorterville; a brother, Harvey Fleming (Jewel), Shorterville; four grandchildren, Lee McPherson, Brian Fleming (Tanya), Heather Fleming and Josh Fleming (Taylor Mock); and three great-grandchildren, Bryce Brannon, Hunter Fleming and Colton Fleming.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Josh Fleming, Lee McPherson, Brian Fleming, Micah Holley, Joey Floyd and Ed Giles.
