HEADLAND. . .Dr. James Wesley Vann, a resident of Headland, died late Tuesday night, June 13, 2023, at his home. He was 97.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 24, 2023, in the Headland Methodist Church with Reverend Tim McCraney officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Headland Methodist Church Family Life Center with Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations presiding over arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Headland Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345 or a favorite charity.
Dr. Vann was born January 23, 1926, in Headland, the son of the late Samuel Richard Vann, Sr. and Emma Kate Solomon Vann. He was a 1944 graduate of Headland High School. He graduated from Auburn University in 1949 and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 1953. He served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corps during the World War II era and later in the U. S. Air Force in Korea as a Dental Officer.
Dr. Vann practiced dentistry in Headland for over 40 years. He was a member of the Headland Methodist Church and Headland Kiwanis Club, serving the latter as President during his tenure. He was active in professional dental groups, the Wiregrass Auburn Club, and was a scholarship donor to the Auburn University Football and Basketball programs. In his younger years, he enjoyed advocating strongly for Headland High School and Auburn University athletics, coaching youth baseball and basketball in Headland and fundraising actively for Headland athletics. He was instrumental in taking youth to Auburn sporting events and creating Auburn fans for life. Go Tigers!
He enjoyed traveling the world, corresponding with friends from all over, especially Korea and Russia. He loved snow skiing, playing bridge, and spending time with family at his cabin in Sunnyside Beach. He was an avid reader and loved music, often playing piano on his lunch break.
Dr. Vann was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, Jack Solomon Vann and wife, Florence Armstrong Vann, Sam R. Vann, Jr. and wife, Fran Mallette Vann, Edith Vann Espy and husband, Major W. Espy, Sr., Grace Vann Brannon and husband, Julian Brannon, William Felix (Bumps) Vann, Sr. and wife, Dot Wood Vann, Emily Vann Ezzell and husband, Oscar Ezzell; brothers-in-law, Roy Luttrell and Lee Bryan; nephew, Mark C. Espy, Sr., nieces, Marilyn E. McClendon, Mila E. Woods and Carol Vann.
Surviving relatives include two sisters, Kate Helen Vann Luttrell, Columbus, GA; Mary Owens Vann Bryan, Headland; nieces and nephews, Jack A. Vann, Dr. Richard K. Vann, Sam R. Vann, III, Dr. Wayne Brannon, Sam V. Brannon, Sid Brannon, Dr. William F. Vann, Jr., Mike Vann, Dale Ezzell, Steve Ezzell, Emily L. Whiteside, Beth L. Saba and Susan B. Jessup.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of HNB First Bank.
The family would like to thank faithful sitters, Chris Gordon, Melanie Greenwood, Ronnie Goods, Jesse Chatman, and the caring staff of Enhabit Hospice.
