Jan Andrea Granger, 74, passed away peacefully at home in Dothan, Alabama, on May 16, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Andrea was born in Marianna, Florida on January 5, 1948, but moved to Dothan, Alabama around 1970 for work. She quickly became very invested in the Dothan community through volunteering and her charitable efforts with church, health organizations and pet rescue groups.
It has been said that Andrea had a heart as Big as Dothan by her constant devotion to helping her community and the many individuals she would discover were in need. Her circle of strong relationships increased throughout Dothan as she maintained just as many friendships still in place in Jackson County. She served on the board of the Jackson Hospital Foundation in honor of her late grandfather who started the hospital and was the first Chief of Staff. She generously gave of her time volunteering at the Flowers Hospital gift shop, Arthritis Foundation, Cirrhosis Foundation, Wiregrass Spay and Neuter Clinic, The Kitty Kottage, Dothan Animal Shelter and Save-a-Pet Program.
In addition, Andrea generously gave of her many talents by designing and making personal craft items and baked goods for others. Everyone always looked forward to every holiday because they knew they would be receiving a customized, T-shirt, holiday ornament, card, or some other unique craft made with love and thoughtfulness. She also was well known for her beautiful lawn with all of its artfully designed flower gardens and colorful foliage which leads to one of her nicknames, Miss Green Thumb! Every time you visited her, you could expect to see the labors of her love in each new plant she would tell you about and show you. Andrea had a tremendous love for schnauzers, but especially her five beloved companions. Jan, Jill, JAG, Drea and Kinnon.
Andrea was preceded in death by her parents, John Andrew and Louise MacKinnon Granger, her sister Vickie Louise Granger, her nephew Andrew Warnberg, and her brother-in-law, Jon Ramsey. She is survived by her beloved sister, Luana Love Ramsey, her many cousins including Margaret (Molly) McKinnon, Ted Gortemoller, Jan Howell, Gina Tinsley (Andy), and Douglas Gillis, her nieces Janet Warnberg, Elizabeth Cope Brannan (Brooks), Margaret Valenza (Donald), Elizabeth Valenza, and many beloved friends.
Andrea was a member of Saint James the Great Anglican Church in Smiths Station, Alabama. The family will have visitation on May 18, 2022, from 5:00 – 7:00 CST at Glover Funeral Home 1468 Hartford Hwy, Dothan, Alabama. Graveside services will be on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at 10:00 AM CST at Riverside cemetery in Marianna, Florida with Father John Klein and Father Laurence Thompson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint James the Great Anglican Church at 601 Rustic Street, Opelika, Alabama, 36801.
