Janet Leigh Engle Cumbie passed away November 26, 2014 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO. after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Jan was born on September 23, 1960 in Columbus, GA. to the late James Arthur “Jim” Engle and Sarah Coxwell Engle, both of Opelika, AL. Jan graduated from Opelika High School in 1978 and she attended the University of Alabama Birmingham to study Dental Hygiene. She received her Dental Hygiene license and certification by the Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama on June 20, 1980. Jan practiced as a dental Hygienist in Opelika and Dothan, Al. prior to moving with her family to Springfield, MO. in 1993. She again relocated with her family to Columbia, MO. In 1996 and worked as an office assistant at Robinson Orthodontics until 2005 when she joined the House of Brokers Realty family as a licensed agent.
During her career at House of Brokers, Jan was presented with the Lawrence Bulgin Award as a new, outstanding agent in 2006. She excelled at and was committed to her own personal and professional development. She achieved the Accredited Buyer Representation Designation and she also graduated from the Realtor Institute. She was well respected by her peers in the real estate community and was appointed to serve on the Multiple Listing Committee and the Board of Directors for the Columbia Board of Realtors. As a “Top 12 Agent” for several years at House of Brokers, Jan exemplified true professionalism and she held herself to the highest ethical standards. She dedicated herself to excellence, making sure each and every client was given the highest degree of care. She was full of warmth, kindness and southern charm, always ready to extend a helping hand to those around her. By going above and beyond, she earned the admiration of her peers and colleagues and was voted Realtor-salesperson of the Year in 2012 for the Columbia Board of Realtors.
Jan was a member of the Broadway Christian Church in Columbia. She was a devoted wife and a very loving and nurturing mother. She loved the vast beauty of the Emerald Coast and she cherished the wonderful memories of family vacations spent on the white sandy beaches of Panama City Beach, Fl. Her warm, caring and generous heart will be missed by everyone.
Jan is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Marty Cumbie; son Clay Cumbie of Dothan, Al; daughter Courtney Jones (Tyler) of Cummings, GA.; mother Sarah Coxwell Engle of Oplelika, Al.; mother-in-law Virginia Cumbie of Opelika, Al; brother-in-law Al Cumbie of Opelika, Al.; nieces Ashlei Cumbie of Auburn, Al.; and Aleisha Cumbie Orrick (Russell) of Alexander City, Al.; Aunt Nellie Bennefield Boland of Opelika, Al.; cousin Robert Bennefield of Pensacola, Fl.; extended family members, Dr. Roland and Kimberly Brooks of Dothan, Al.; Godsons Seth and Andrew Brooks (Hillery and daughter Hadley) of Dothan, Al.; and goddaughters Amy and Sarah Kate Brooks of Dothan, Al.
She was preceded in death by her father James Arthur “Jim” Engle of Opelika, Al.; grandmother Bessie Ruth Head Coxwell of Opelika, Al.; and by her father-in-law, W.A. “Bill” Cumbie of Opelika, AL.
Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, Mo. assisted the family. Visitation was held on Monday, Dec.1 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Broadway Christian Church in Columbia. A Celebration of Life service was held at the church following the visitation. Interment will be in Dothan, Al. On Thursday Dec 4, a visitation will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2:00 pm burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan, Al.
