Janice G. Herrington

The family would like to invite friends and family to Joe and Janice’s home, 16 Clara Street, Cowarts, Alabama on Sunday, June 9, 2024 at 2 pm to gather to remember a life well lived in Janice’s honor.

Janice G. Herrington, a beacon of love and creativity, left this world on June 6, 2024, after a valiant battle with an extended illness. Born on the warm summer day of July 8, 1953, in Blakely, Georgia, Janice's journey through life was one of adventure, passion, and an unwavering dedication to her family and friends. She passed away surrounded by love in Cowarts, Alabama, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and vivacity that will be cherished forever.

Janice's life was a testament to her adventurous spirit and creative heart. As a young girl, she worked on cars with her father, sparking a lifetime of diverse talents and skills. Her educational path led her from the halls of Dothan High School to earning her GED, a stepping stone that propelled her into a world of opportunities. Janice's career was as multifaceted as her personality; from building airplanes with Hayes International to creating beautiful pieces of furniture with Dolly Madison. Her hands were not only skilled but also held the power to transform raw materials into objects of function and beauty.

For over three decades, Janice worked alongside her beloved husband, Joe Herrington, in radiation protection at Nuclear Plants. Their professional partnership was only rivaled by their personal one, as they traversed the country as contract workers, living in places along the west coast and sharing a life rich with experiences. Janice's love story with Joe began with persistence and a chance meeting at McDonald's, a narrative as endearing as it is enduring, spanning 36 wonderful years.

Janice's personality was as gigantic and vibrant as the blooms in her cherished garden. Her home was a sanctuary adorned with flowers, bird feeders, and baths, reflecting her love for nature and the simple joys of life. Arizona held a special place in her heart, as did her miniature Schnauzer, Bo with whom she shared a bond of unconditional love and loyalty. But it was her grandchildren who were the true delight of her life; each one held a piece of her heart and the essence of her spirit.

A loving mother, Janice's children—Theresa ((Dan) Gorton, Ronnie (Fran) McCullough, Joseph (Joyl) Herrington, Mark Herrington, Brook (Lauren) Herrington, and Cynthia (Michael) Scott, and her adored grandchildren, Andrew Martin, Katherine Martin, Corey Pridgen, Josh Pridgen, Kayla Pridgen, Clay Herrington, Colter Herrington, Madison Parrish, Logan Herrington, Jackson Herrington, Parley Herrington, Emily Gorton, Ethan Gorton, Michael Gorton, Brittany Gorton, Kristopher Snyder, Tyler Watkins, Ashlyn Watkins, and Braxton Scott were the foundation of her world. Her sister, Judy (Tony) Sevec, along with a host of nieces and nephews, also survive her, each carrying a spark of Janice's extraordinary light. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Matti Lee Elmore Greathouse, and her siblings, Jennette Kirkland, Billy Joe Sawyer, Elizabeth Metcalf, and Robert Douglas.

An avid quilter and seamstress, Janice's creative talents were yet another avenue through which she expressed her love and care for her family and friends. She was fiercely loyal to those close to her heart, and her friendships were as deep and enduring as her love for her family. Janice's life was a beautiful patchwork of experiences, relationships, and accomplishments, each thread woven with intention and grace.
