Date: A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2020 for family only.

Janice Lee (Bales) Helms, age 75, of Midland City, died on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Dale Medical Center, due to a lengthy illness with her husband by her side.

Janice was born in Altoona, PA, daughter of Helen Ammerman and Eugene Bales. She was the granddaughter of Alfred and Margaret Ammerman, who she adored, also of Altoona (all of whom are deceased). She graduated in 1963 from Altoona High School and worked at Boyer Bros. Candy Factory until her enlistment in the Marine Corps in 1964. In 1965 she met and married David Helms, Jr. in Norfolk, VA who was in the Navy. They eventually moved around to Washington DC, Opelika, AL, and Montgomery, AL. Janice enlisted into the Navy in 1977 where she worked as a statistician and Navy Liaison for Naval Recruiting District Montgomery. She then left the Navy and worked Civil Service to round out her 36 years in government service, retiring in 2005.

Janice is survived by her husband of 55 years, David B. Helms, Jr.; her sister-in-law Mellanie (Ken) Bailey; brothers-in-law, Lee (Renee) Helms, Jody (Julie) Helms, and Robin (Marlena) Helms; sister-in-law, Callie (Kyle) Folds; and a special niece, Salena (Bruce) Hayes. She also leaves several cousins who mean the world to her even though they are far away. She will also be missed by her loyal and loving Maltese dog, Bailey, who stayed by her side. Her brother-in-law, Dr. Emory Helms, preceded her in death.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2020 for family only. Any contributions should be made to the Humane Shelter of Chilton County, Alabama, or a humane shelter of your choice.
