COLUMBIA, ALABAMA. . .Janie Elizabeth Wood, a resident of Spanish Fort, Alabama, formerly of Columbia, died Saturday night, October 22, 2022, at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort at the age of 100.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 26, 2022, in the Columbia City Cemetery with Dr. Adair Whatley Gilbert officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, 905 Gertrude Michaels Drive, Talladega, AL 35160 or the charity of your choice.

Janie was born in Columbia, Alabama on April 6, 1922. She was the 4th of 7 children of Alex Wood and Betty King Wood. She was a remarkable person growing up in Columbia. At age 16, she stood in line for hours in freezing cold rain to shake the hand of George Washington Carver, and spent many hours after school teaching Latin to other students. She graduated from Houston County High School in 1939 a year early after skipping a grade. In 1943, she graduated with honors from Judson College with a double major in English and French and a minor in Art.

She began working as a drafts woman for the Corp of Engineers during World War II where she spent nearly 40 years, eventually achieving the title of architect. An avid traveler when her job was not taking her to work in Korea or Panama Canal, she was traveling to the Holy Land to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, or kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland, or riding a camel to the pyramids, or visiting tribes in the jungles of Africa. She was a member of the Columbia Presbyterian Church.

She returned to her childhood home of Columbia in her later years to care for her mother, after which she moved to Westminster to help care for her sister.

Her wisdom, humbleness and life of service to God, family and friends was unmatched. She was small in statue, but gigantic in deeds and adventurism. She remained vibrant and curious and studious until the end.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander David Wood, II and Betty King Wood, along with siblings Alexander David “Buddy” Wood, III, Nan Maiben Stillings, Edwin King Wood and Betty Storrs. She is survived by her sisters, Carol Murphy, Alabaster, AL and Lida Landreth of Chattanooga, TN, and several nieces and nephews including Annefranc Brewer (Grady), Broken Arrow, OK., Jane Stillings Buell, Mobile, AL, and Bill Stillings (Lisa), of Mobile, AL.
