Mrs. Holmes was born in Birmingham, AL, in 1925 and graduated from Birmingham’s Woodlawn High School in 1943. She married Robert Milton Holmes, also of Birmingham, in 1948, and they enjoyed a full, happy life together for 64 years. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes moved their young family to Dothan in 1960. While her husband pursued his career in architecture, Mrs. Holmes poured her life into her home, family, church and community. She was always eager to cheerfully join in where there was work to be done in all of her children’s school, sports and church activities. As a 60- year member of First Presbyterian Church of Dothan, she served in the Women of the Church and sang in the church choir; and she was a longtime member of the Dothan Service League, Garden Study Club, and the Dothan Country Club Women’s Golf Association as well as her bridge club and study club. She loved being outdoors, working in her yard, and participating in fine arts activities and oil painting.
Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; by her parents Idas Christopher Entrekin and Lillie Bell McEver Entrekin; and by her sisters Pauline, Elizabeth, Edith, Dorothy, and Dolores, and her brothers Idas Christopher, Jr., Fred, and Charles.
She is survived by her four children, Robert “Buster” Holmes, Jr. (Gina) of Yucaipa, CA; Michael Douglas Holmes of Dothan; Thaddeus Barton Holmes (Donna) of Spanish Fort, AL; and Laura Holmes Hambaugh (Robert) of Mentone, AL; four grandchildren, Hilary Holmes Fletcher (Scott) of Duluth, GA; Colton Holmes of Spanish Fort, AL; Jonah Holmes Hambaugh of Dothan; and Lucie Fort Hambaugh of Dothan; two great grandsons, Ethan Fletcher and Isaac Fletcher of Duluth, GA; and a number of very dear nieces and nephews.
