Jenny Payne possessed an admirable generosity- to the point of great personal sacrifice. She had the spiritual gift of giving, a gift given to her by the Holy Spirit by virtue of her relationship with Jesus Christ by faith in him.

Her generosity impacted all of her relationships, especially those with her family. She loved her family.  Keith, her husband of 56 years, and her sons Brian and Eric were the loves of her life.

From early on and through the intervening years, it was not uncommon to see Jenny and Keith cruising around in a classic car. Raising those boys was a different endeavor than being the eldest sibling to girls and she got it right. She was so grateful for Keith, and proud of Brian and Eric-and for the two daughters she always wanted, Audrey and Heather. It would be these two treasured daughters-in-law who would mother her beloved grandchildren: Brooks, Anna Beth, Colton, Ella, Nate, Seth, Ava and Seefen.

She adored her Grandchildren-and they knew it. Nana was certain that her grandchildren were the cutest, sweetest and smartest in the world. And she was quick to share that knowledge with others. The joy she had from those grandchildren was immeasurable. If a picture says a thousand words, then what about a thousand pictures? Her grandchildren abide in every room of her home. Definitely a house built on love-a house largely prepared for by her cherished parents and sister.

Jenny loved her parents, Ed and Opal, and her sisters, Pat, Marilyn, Marcia and Sue Ellen. Being the oldest of five siblings, Jenny was a beloved sister. She loved them as fiercely as they loved her and for girls, that sometimes meant loudly. When together, they each tried to outwit, outplay and outlast the others. They meant everything to each other; five parts to make the whole. And in that home vital disciplines and talents were nurtured, like a love for reading and playing the piano.

She loved to read. Jenny spent her formative years in Basin Community School and then graduated from Kinston High School. It was during her early years that she developed a love of reading that would be a lifelong enjoyment. Her love of reading led to a state Spelling Bee Championship and, more recently, her ability to raze the competition in Words with Friends.

That girl had game.

But as equal to her love for reading, she loved to play the piano. Jenny was a talented pianist and spent many years playing in church. Very seldom did she tickle the ivories… she gave them a beating. The joy she had when she played reverberated in the music and through the soul.

The piano was her central way to serve Christ’s church. And her example of service to Christ’s church deeply impacted her sons and their families.
