Jerome Lee Sullivan III

Jerome Lee Sullivan III, M.D., Ph.D., physician, scientist, and associate professor of pathology, died on May 3, 2013 in Winter Park, Florida. Jerome was a loving husband and father who was adored by his wife and children. “Romey,” as he was nicknamed by his family, was born on October 13, 1944 in Dothan, Alabama, and graduated from Dothan High School in 1962. He was descended from several founding Dothan families, including his late grandparents, Frank and Sara Newton, and great-grandparents Gary (Montana) and Celestia Owens. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Alabama, his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Florida, and his Ph.D. from Florida State University (his mother’s and grandmother’s alma mater).  He served on the faculties of University of South Florida, Medical University of South Carolina, University of Florida, and University of Central Florida. He was a leading researcher in his field, and was passionate about his life’s work studying iron and heart disease, to which he devoted over 30 years. He delivered numerous lectures in the United States and abroad, including China and Australia, and was widely published in medical literature. His seminal publication, “Iron and the Sex Difference in Heart Disease Risk,” appeared in the June 13, 1981 issue of The Lancet, and it is still frequently cited. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, music, and classic films, and he was also an accomplished amateur photographer.

Dr. Sullivan will be deeply missed by all of his family, friends, and colleagues. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 32 years, Dr. Laura Geisel Sullivan, a pathologist practicing in Orlando, Florida, and their four children, Best Kimbrell Sullivan, Jerome Lee Sullivan IV, Kathryn Henley Sullivan, and William Sheffield Sullivan. He is also survived by his daughter Lise Sullivan Ode, and his grandchildren, Savannah Jane Ode and Luke Henry Ode, of Cumming, Georgia. His two younger siblings, Franklin Newton Sullivan and Sara Sullivan Wiggins, live in Dothan, Alabama. Sara Newton Carroll of Ozark, Alabama, is his surviving aunt. He is predeceased by his parents, Jerome Lee Sullivan, Jr. and Marguerite Newton Sullivan of Dothan, as well as by his infant son, Sean Michael Sullivan.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Byrd Funeral Home located at 3409 West Main Street in Dothan, Alabama.  Funeral Services will be held in the Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 2:00 PM with Rev. John D. Reese officiating . Interment will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery on Hartford Highway in Dothan with Byrd Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association.
