Jerry worked with his brother Charles Hartley at Hartley Plumbing Company for many years. He was a member of the Local 52 Pipefitters Union and was one of many who worked to build Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant in Houston County, AL.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by a sister Mary Ann Rose; a son-in-law William R. (Billy) Solomon; his Father and Mother-in-law Paul and Lucille King; Two brothers-in-law George Hermensen and James Branton.
