Mr. Jerry Scott Atkinson, age 83, a resident of Dothan, died early Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Crowne Health Care in Eufaula after an extended illness.


Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Glover Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Curtis Harvey officiating.  Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Glover Funeral Home of Dothan directing.


The family will be receiving friends from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Tuesday prior to services at Glover Funeral Home Chapel.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Resource Center of Dothan, 1314 Westgate Parkway, Suite 2, Dothan, AL. 36303.


Mr. Atkinson was born on January 26, 1936 in Barney, Georgia the son of Ollie Robert Atkinson and Myrtice Sutton Atkinson.  He grew up in Barney, Georgia then he served 14 years in U.S. Army and then served with U.S. Air Force for 7 years retiring after a total of 21 years of service.  After his retirement from Air Force he moved to Dothan and began working with the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in the Nuclear Medicine Department where he served from 1973 until retiring in 1989.  Mr. Atkinson completed Nuclear Medicine School at the U.S. Naval Air Base in Bethesda, Maryland and he later attended Wallace College in Dothan in the Cabinet Making and general studies.  He enjoyed woodworking and repairing clocks.   Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Adel United Methodist Church in Adel, Georgia.


He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Samuel James (S.J.) Atkinson.


Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Louise Summers Atkinson, Dothan; daughter, Dana Denise Atkinson, Santa Rosa Beach, FL.; son, Gregory Scott Atkinson (Janet), Dothan; sister, Roberta Atkinson Wetherington, Greenville, S.C.; 3 grandchildren, Jason Anthony Atkinson, Midland City; Trey Hunt (Kim), Slocomb; Brittany Sanders (Joseph), Hartford; 4 great-grandchildren, Sadie Grace Sanders, Hartford, Jayden Atkinson, Dothan, Kade and Adler Hunt, Slocomb; 3 sisters-in-law, Anna Lawhorn, Adel, GA.; Mary Fountain, Valdosta, GA.; Doris Summers, Valdosta, GA.; several nieces and nephews.


Asked to serve as pallbearers will be: Josh Tindell, Willie Proctor, Joseph Sanders, Jason Atkinson, and Luke Tindell.
