COLUMBUS, GEORGIA . . . Jerry Young Sauls, a former resident of Columbus, Georgia, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, in The Roosevelt Place, Warm Springs, Georgia. He was 80.


            Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. (C.D.T.) Sunday, May 22, 2016, in the Shorterville Baptist Church with Reverend Mickey Skinner officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow in the Shorterville Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.


                        Mr. Sauls was born in Dale County, Alabama, near Skipperville, son of the late Mercer Young Sauls and Thelma Skinner Sauls. He lived in various locations in the U. S. and overseas while serving in the U. S. Army. Mr. Sauls lived in Columbus, Georgia twenty-one years before moving to Warm Springs earlier this year. He retired from the Army with rank of First Sergeant and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with One Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver Service Star and one Bronze Service Star. Mr. Sauls was a member of the New Apostolic Church in Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wives, Hildegard Sauls and Lioba Laurence, two sisters, Audie Mobley and Myrtle Buxton, and two brothers, William T. Sauls and James Robert Sauls.


            Surviving relatives include three sons, Randy Sauls (Jody), Benson, Minnesota; Johnny Sauls (Angie), and Erwin Sauls (Brenda), all of Shorterville; three daughters, Ramona Rodriguez (David), Columbus, GA; Raneth Randolph (Alton), Livermore, CA; and Renee Kortbawi, Columbus, GA; two brothers, David Sauls (Mary Lou), Shorterville; and Bobby Sauls (Sarah), Abbeville; nine grandchildren, Shane Sauls, Amanda Sauls, Christopher Sauls, Matthew Rodriguez, Marcus Rodriguez (Ashley), Mary Rodriguez, Ralaya Allen (Ken), Brad Kortbawi (Jhovana), and Brenna Vrtiska (Terry); six great-grandchildren, Nicholas Sauls, Adriana Allen, Ayana Allen, Brennan Kortbawi, Brynnleigh Vrtiska, and Brystoll Vrtiska.
