Jesse Royce Griggs, known affectionately to all as Royce, departed this life on April 8, 2024, at the age of 86 in Dothan, Alabama. Born on July 5, 1937, in Dale County, Alabama, the son of the late Rassie and Mary Frances Griggs, Royce’s life was one characterized by enduring love and commitment. He was a cherished husband to Jackie Griggs for 49 wonderful years, a father to his daughter Jan Simpler (Jeremy) and a doting grandfather to Wyatt and Emmy Simpler.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his infant son, Wesley Royce Griggs; his granddaughter Hannah Brooke Simpler and sister Janice Griggs Thompson.
For 38 years, Royce dedicated his career to the US Army Aviation Development Test Activity at Ft. Rucker
Royce’s passion for sports was undeniable. He was an exceptionally talented baseball player whose prowess on the field became a local legend. He was also recruited to play professional ball. His love for the game extended to softball and basketball. A true Alabama football fan, Royce’s enthusiasm for his team was infectious, and his support never wavered. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Friday, April 12, 2024 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Edenfield officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to2 P.M. Friday, one hour prior to the service.
As we bid farewell to Jesse Royce Griggs, we celebrate a life well-lived, a legacy of love, and the countless memories he leaves behind.
