Jim M. Ray of Dothan passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at the Henry County Health and Rehabilitation Facility in Abbeville, AL after a long illness. He was 90.


 


Graveside services will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Dr. Joseph Johnson and Ashley Drake Mertz officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Helen Bennett Scholarship Fund at Evergreen Presbyterian Church, 1103 N. Pontiac Ave, Dothan, Al 36303 or to a charity of your choice.


 


Jim grew up in Enterprise, AL and left to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. After the war he returned to Enterprise and married Allene Byrd. They moved to Dothan where he worked in the heating and air-conditioning business. Later he started and ran Jim Ray Service Company for many years before his retirement. Jim was a founding member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. Prior to and after his retirement, Jim attended Wallace Community College where he greatly enjoyed attending many of the technical classes such as automotive and woodworking.


 


Jim was pre-deceasesd by his loving wife of 46 years, Allene Byrd Ray; his parents, Willis Morton and Eunice Wood Ray; a brother, Edwin W. Ray and sister-in-law, Jeannete Spooner Ray.


 


He is survived by his 3 children, Terry Ray (Mary Sue) of Panama City Beach, FL; Jimmy Ray (Cathy) of Headland; and William Ray (Suzanne) of Dothan; a brother Dr. Joe B. Ray (Delaine) of Mobile; seven grandchildren Mark Ray (Jennie) of Midlothian, VA; Greg Ray (Krista) of Mobile; Melissa Burns of Naples, FL; Carmen Adamcryck (Tim) of Panama City Beach, FL; Kelly McCord (Dusty) of Dothan; Adam Ray (Tara) of Dothan; and Amy Amaro (Justin) of Cairo, GA; and 10 great-grandchildren.


 


The family would like to offer sincere thanks to the staff at Henry County Health and Rehabilitation Facility for the loving care provided over the past two years.
