COLUMBIA. . .Jimmy Donald “Jim” Smith, a resident of Henry County, between Headland and Columbia, died early Thursday morning, March 30, 2023, at his home. He was 85.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 2, 2023, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Brother Don Moore officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Edwin M. Glover, 6952 State Highway 134, East, Columbia, AL 36319.
Mr. Smith was born and reared in Dale County and was a graduate of Midland City High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy at an early age and served his country from 1955 until 1963 and served aboard nuclear powered submarines. Mr. Smith retired from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Naperville, Illinois. In earlier years, he was employed by General Electric and Westinghouse. Mr. Smith was a member of the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Smith, his father, Hugh Smith, mother, Louise Lisenby Helms, step-father, Raymond Helms, and four brothers, Jerry Smith, Jack Helms, Robert Helms and Ray Helms.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Shirley Yvonne Granberry “Bonnie” Smith; two sons, Gregory Smith (Tracy), Leesburg, FL; and Mark Smith (Vivian), Wheeling, Illinois; a brother, Jack Helms (Georgianna), Sacramento, California; grandchildren, Jamie Smith (Courtney), Brandon Smith, Matthew Smith (Stasia), Lindsey Smith (Ben), Mike Smith (Kendra), Lucas Smith (Selma), Elizabeth Smith and John Paul Smith; numerous great-grandchildren.
