Jimmy Leroy Downer, 79, of Webb, went to be with his heavenly father Saturday, October 21, 2017 surrounded by his family at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm Thursday October 26, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Cobb officiating. The family will receive friends 1-2 pm prior at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Webb City Cemetery. Flowers are being accepted.
Jimmy was born October 24, 1937 in Geneva County, Alabama and moved to Webb, Alabama at an early age. After 48 years of dedicated service, Jimmy retired from Jackson Gas and Electric of Dothan, Alabama in 2013, due to health reasons. On June 1, 1967, he was awarded The Carnegie Medal for Heroism for saving the life of D. Glenn Walker from drowning at the Columbia River in Columbia, Alabama. Jimmy loved fishing, gardening, watching Continental Championship wrestling and Alabama football. Jimmy left us a beautiful gift, his positive attitude, his passion for life and most importantly, his unconditional love.
He was one of four children born to parents Joe and Nolie Downer of Webb, Alabama. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his very precious granddaughter Ashley Michelle Eldridge.
Jimmy will forever be remembered by his devoted wife of 58 years, Carolyn Marchman Downer; his children Teresa Downer and Tammy Eldridge; his granddaughter Jessica Nicole Eldridge; his sister, Helon Scott; and his two brothers, Charles (Sallie) Downer and Marty Downer.
Serving as pallbearers will be John Kaye, Randy Kirkland, Eddie Helms, Stan Scott, Morgan Hicks, and Steve Scott.
