Jimmy Wood Smith
Jimmy Wood Smith of Ashford died Sunday, December 2, 2012 at his home. He was 74.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Watermark Church, Ashford, with the Rev. Todd Thorpe officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 until 1:45 Tuesday prior to service time. A private graveside service will follow at Ashford City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Building Fund of Watermark Church, 103 Elmer Road, Ashford, AL 36312.
Born on July 24, 1938, Mr. Smith was the son of George and Eleanor Wofford Smith of Bazemore Mill Pond, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harriman and Georgia Summerford, his sister-in-law, Elaine Hall Smith, and his niece, Susan Heaslett.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patsey Summerford Smith, of Ashford; his daughter, Stacey Eugenia Smith of Dothan; his son and daughter-in-law, Troy Wood Smith and Sherryll Smith; a grandson, Trevor Wood Smith, and a granddaughter, Mallorie Adaire Smith, all of Ashford. He is also survived by a brother, Larry Winston Smith of Bazemore, a sister and brother-in-law, Sheila Smith Heaslett and Jack Heaslett, of Dothan; brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, Harry and Leslie Summerford, George and Lynne Summerford, and Cindy Summerford Aman and Stan Aman, all of Dothan. His uncle, Lester Fellows of Ashford, also survives. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, and cousins and a special family friend, Betty June Summerford.
The family also wishes to acknowledge the survival of his best friends, Tommy Graddy of Ashford and David Cannon of Pansey.
Mr. Smith was a 1956 graduate of Ashford High School. He was a member of Watermark Church and the Wednesday Loop Group of the church. He retired from CSX Railroad after 38 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman as a hunter, fisherman and trapper.
Pallbearers are nephews, Wint Smith, Alex Smith, Doug Summerford, Andy Summerford; cousins-in-law and friends, Chris Lasseter and Tommy Graddy. Honorary pallearers are David Cannon, Randy Nowell, Mark Fellows and his nephew, Todd Heaslett.
