From her birth on January 17, 1953 in Enterprise, AL, to her death on November 22, 2014, Joan had a wonderful life and was blessed with caring family, friends, and pets. She grew up on a farm where her love of animals originated and became a hallmark of her personality. She graduated from Troy University and taught at Hillcrest Elementary School for eighteen years and enjoyed spending many summers at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
Joan was especially proud of her beloved children, Jennifer Whitford (Ray) of Franklin, TN; Jay Britton of New York, NY; and Erin Britton of Richmond, VA. She was blessed with two long and loving marriages: Andrew Joseph Byrd, of Enterprise, AL for the last twenty years and formerly James C. Britton, III of Galax, VA.
She is predeceased by her father, Edgar Eugene Whigham of Enterprise. She is survived by her husband; her children; her mother, Nell Whigham of Enterprise; her uncle, Gene Helms of Ft. Collins, CO; sister, Stephanie “Jane” Whigham Jones (Charles) of Enterprise; brother, Edgar “Ed” Whigham (Therisa) of Dothan; her many wonderful nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend Ann Averett, who provided wonderful support over the last six months.
"To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." For Joan, those hearts include her friends, family, the many students she taught over the years, and her many pets and beloved animals: horses King and Albert, dog Chloe, and raccoon Jellybean, just to name a few.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Searcy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cliff Quincy officiating. Visiting hours will be held from 12:00 Noon until service time. Burial will follow in Enterprise City Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Enterprise Public Library, 101 E. Grubbs St., Enterprise, AL 36330.
