Jocelyn Shapiro Wood, of Dozier, Alabama, passed away at her home on August 2, 2024, after a hard fought battle with cancer. She was 66.
Born on June 9, 1958, to Samuel and Mariette Shapiro in Lewiston, Maine, she developed a love for animals at an early age. This love for animals continued to grow throughout the years as she became a talented dog groomer and passionate advocate for animal rescue. She gave freely of her time, energy and skills to help better the lives of countless rescue animals. Jocelyn married her soulmate and fellow animal lover, Jim, in 2014. Jocelyn touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and love for both animals of all shapes and sizes and her family. Jocelyn dedicated her life to caring for pets, bringing joy and comfort to countless furry friends and their owners. Her gentle touch and unwavering patience made her a cherished figure in the local pet community, known for her skill and passion in grooming. Beyond her work, Jocelyn was a loving wife, mother, and friend. Jocelyn’s kindness and generosity knew no bounds, and she will be remembered for her selflessness and the way she always put others before herself.
A service to celebrate Jocelyn’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 9, 2024, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 AM and continuing until service time. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Meadowlawn Cemetery in Enterprise.
Jocelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Diane Sangsland.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jim Wood, who faithfully cared for her throughout the duration of her illness; her sons, Trevor Long and Jon Kirk; her stepson & daughter-in-law, Bill & Dorothy Wood; her sister, Nancy Kennefick; 7 nieces & nephews, and her many cherished rescue animals.
Jocelyn will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the eternal love she shared so generously during her time with us.
The family is asking that we not send flowers or plants. Jocelyn and Jim’s home is filled with pets of all kinds and many plants and flowers are toxic to those family members and therefore would not be able to come home with Jim. We ask that all of us help Jim pay for the wonderful care that Jocelyn was provided during her fight or consider making a donation to your local animal rescue.
