JONESBORO, GEORGIA. . .Joe Warren Powers, a resident of Jonesboro, Georgia, died Sunday evening, August 13, at his home. He was 80.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. (C.D.T.), Saturday, August 19, 2017, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel, Headland, Alabama, with Reverend Wendell Holmes officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow in the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Cemetery, near Ozark, AL. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. Saturday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Carmel Methodist Cemetery Fund, c/o Kate Dossett, 165 Private Road 1569, Ozark, AL 36360.
Joe was born February 5, 1937, son of the late Lum T. Powers and Gladys Stephens Powers. He was raised in Dale County, Alabama and graduated from Midland City High School in 1955 and soon enlisted in the United States Air Force. He met and married the love of his life, Peggy A. Walker and retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant. Joe served his country as an Aircraft Maintenance and Weapons System Technician. He served during the Vietnam War and was awarded the AF Commendation Medal (Meritorious Service) with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, AF Good Conduct Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Ribbon, AF Longevity Service Ribbon with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award with One Device, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. After discharge from the military, he moved to Dothan, Alabama and attended Wallace Community College and Troy University. He received a B.S. in Business Administration in 1983. Upon graduation from college, he moved to Morrow, Georgia and was employed by the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons, as Operations Accountant. He received numerous recognitions for outstanding performance in all job elements and received the Regional Directors Award, 1991, Employee of The Year. On September 27, 1996, Joe W. Powers received recognition of 35 years of service in the government of the United States of America.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Walker Powers, two sisters, Eloise Austin and Betty Green and two brothers, Pete Powers and Junior Powers.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Karen K. Powers, Jonesboro, GA; a son, Joseph M. Powers, Tampa, FL; a sister, Judy Corbin and Husband Lowell, Summerville, SC; a brother, Jimmy Powers, Ray, AR, and grandson, Christopher M. Powers, Dothan, AL.
