ATHENS, ALABAMA. . .Joel Kenneth Alford, a resident of Athens, Alabama, died Tuesday morning, September 24, 2024, in the Limestone Rehab Center in Athens. He was 90.


            Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in the Ashford City Cemetery, Ashford, Alabama, with Reverend Danny Sumerlin officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations, Headland, Alabama, is in charge of arrangements.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Webb Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 70, Webb, AL 36376 or the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111.


            Mr. Alford was born and reared in Samson, Alabama, son of the late James Houston Alford and Millie Kilpatrick Alford. He was a graduate of Samson High School where he lettered in football and baseball. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1948 and went on to serve in the U. S. Army on active duty in Korea during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Army with rank of Corporal, he was employed by Wiregrass Electric Co-Op of Hartford, Alabama. Mr. Alford enrolled in Auburn University where he received a B. S. Degree in Industrial Engineering. Shortly after he graduated from Auburn, he was employed by The Boeing Company. While employed by Boeing, he was a member of the teams that built the Saturn V and the Lunar Rover Vehicle which was used on the first launch to the moon. He also participated with multiple teams that built the Space Station and was a former member of the AWACS Team. Mr. Alford retired from The Boeing Company after thirty-five years of service. He worked for Boeing at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, Seattle, Washington, New Orleans, Louisiana and Huntsville, Alabama.                                                                                          Mr. Alford was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens and formerly served as a Deacon at Grace Baptist Church in Kent, Washington where he was active with the youth and served on various other committees. He was a dedicated family man and friendly Christian minded person that loved sharing life with his family, nieces and nephews and his special friends that also became part of his family. He was always encouraging, very wise, always smiling, sharing stories with lots of laughs and wish to each of them to excel and be successful with Gods spirit. Mr. Alford formerly served as President of the Moores Mill Heights Homeowners Association. He was a loyal “WAR EAGLE FAN” and was a member of Tigers Unlimited since 1986. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Alford.


Surviving relatives include his wife of sixty-four years, Sylvia Simmons Alford; sisters in law, Pat Howell Alford, Samson, AL; and Doris Simmons Barley, Webb, AL;  special grandchildren, Grace Hearn and Jack Hearn; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and other adopted nieces and nephews outside of the immediate family.
