Joel Lamar Ortega, 66, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at a local hospital.


 


He was born on September 27, 1946, in Los Alamos, New Mexico to Mike and Ruth Ortega. He moved to Albany, GA where he graduated from Albany High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Vietnam War in an Engineering Battalion.


 


Lamar was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity where he served on the Vestory and various other committees. He retired from Lindsey Manufacturing in 2006 to pursue his love of fishing, woodworking and travel. He was a volunteer at the Dothan Animal Shelter. He welcomed many rescue dogs into his home. He was an organ donor.


 


The service will be at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity conducted by Reverend Ede Plovanick and Reverend Peter Wong at 2 P.M. Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Reception following the service in the Parrish Hall.


 


He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Brenda Ortega, his sister, Ann O. Griffin (Larry) of Albany, GA; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, an uncle David Bass, as well as many cousins in the area.


 


In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the Wiregrass Humane Society or to the church.
