A Heart Bigger than The One that Got Away

Mr. John B. Logan, Jr., age 82, of Samson, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015.  A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2015, at the Samson First Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Craddock officiating and Pittman Funeral Home of Samson directing.  The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Logan was born in Autaugaville, Alabama, on September 16, 1932, to the late John B. Logan, Sr. and Ruby M. Smith Logan. At the age 5, he relocated with his family to Samson, where his father worked with Youngerman Reynolds Lumber Company. He was an Auburn man and prior to his retirement, he was a math instructor at Enterprise State Junior College for thirty-three years. He served in the army during the Korean War and was passionate about the Wounded Warrior Project. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Lena Logan; daughter, Amy Logan; and a brother, Jerry Logan.

He is survived by three sons, John B. Logan, III, of Enterprise, Nelson Logan of Cumming, Georgia, and Walt Logan of Samson; daughter, Lisa Logan Rich (James) of Athens, Alabama; the mothers of his children, Jean Nelson Logan Shearer of Plains, Georgia, and Karen Walton Logan of Samson; six grandchildren, Edward Logan Rich, William Nelson Logan, Mary Elizabeth Rich Dotson, Mallory Katherine Rich, Savannah Rilee Logan, and Olivia Grace Logan; two brothers, Henry Gaffney Logan (Donna) of Samson and Robert Charles “Bob” Logan (Erin) of Gaskin; two sisters, Delores Amelia Logan Baxley of Milton, Florida, and Linda Kay Logan Aughtman of Samson, and numerous, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John B. was a loving father, avid hunter, fisherman, and storyteller, forester, mathematician, educator, hobby farmer, and noted ladies man. He had a heart bigger than the fish that got away, and he never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Everybody who knew John B. has heard about the “moose”, (that he claims to have shot whilst hanging upside down, left-handed, over his shoulder, looking through a mirror) which is proudly displayed at the highest position of all the deer showcased at Logan’s Sportman Lodge. Truth be told, it’s a pretty good deer that was shot about 20 yards away.

Despite his innate impatience, his heart extended from here to Key West, where as a bachelor, he took his children on vacation, made a U-turn in Miami just to go back to The Keys to buy his inconsolable--and sadly deceased--daughter, Amy, a charm for her much beloved bracelet.

His gigantic heart, quick wit and saucy humor were unparalleled. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Enterprise State Community College Scholarship Foundation in the name of John B. Logan, Jr. or Combat Wounded Outdoors.
