JOHN  BENJAMIN  SMITH


 


ABBEVILLE. . .John Benjamin (J.B.) Smith, a resident of State Highway 10, West, Abbeville, died Sunday night, March 18, 2012, at his home. He was 89.


 


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in the Sardis Baptist Church with Reverend George Bryan officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the mortuary in Abbeville.


 


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sardis Baptist Cemetery Fund, c/o Brenda Roberson, 538 County Road 23, Abbeville, AL. 36310 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL. 36303.


 


            Mr. Smith was born in the Tumbleton community but was reared in the Pleasant Grove and Sardis communities of Henry County, son of the late John Alto Smith and Willie Mae Murphy Smith. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1955, Mr. Smith enlisted in the Army Reserve in Abbeville and retired in 1981 with rank of Staff Sergeant. He lived in the Sardis community all his adult lifetime where he served as a Deacon in the Sardis Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was a member of the Young and Adult Farmer’s Association and the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. He was retired from Price Brothers Gas Company as a truck driver and salesman. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Smith Blount.


 


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Inez Tharpe Smith, Abbeville; a daughter, Brenda Smith Fulford and husband, Ted, Abbeville; two sons, Benny Smith and wife, Renee, Abbeville and Brent Smith and wife, Amy, Wicksburg; a brother, Olin Smith and wife, Louise, Abbeville; four grandchildren, Spence Fulford and wife, Cheri, Lindsey Smith, Audrey Bawcum and Trey Fortune, three great-grandchildren, Rusty Brown, Lily Rae Fulford and Jackson Bawcum.


 


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Spence Fulford, Trey Fortune, Danny Beaty, William Bush, Greg Gordon, Mike Tew, Tarron Thorpe, Kenneth Tew, Tracy Thorpe and Larry Pitchford.
