John Benjamin Logan, III, was a gifted educator, wonderful friend, and beloved family member. He was born July 16, 1968, in Samson, Alabama, to John Benjamin Logan, Jr. and Jean Nelson Logan Shearer. John passed away on November 21, 2023, at his home where he lived with his fur baby Archer, a rambunctious standard poodle.
He attended Enterprise State Community College where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Tutorial Assistance Program, and an Entertainer extraordinaire. John continued his studies at Auburn University, Florida State University, and Troy University where he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in History.
John was born to be a teacher. He taught U.S. History for nearly 20 years at Enterprise High School (EHS) and Enterprise State Community College. As much as he loved teaching, he loved his students more. He had a unique talent for bringing history to life and would occasionally be seen dressed in compelling costumes of famous historic figures like Uncle Sam. For many years at EHS, John taught Advanced Placement courses and sponsored the Government Club which won numerous honors and awards.
He was known for his quick wit, profound sense of humor, and knack for spinning captivating yarns. John absolutely loved others and expressed that love like few people manage to do. He shared his gift of hospitality and welcomed everyone into his home. John enjoyed the company of his friends and planned weekly game day gatherings to watch Auburn football (much to his sisters’ chagrin). His love was best expressed in his relationship with his mother, whom after she could no longer live alone, he lived full-time with and cared for until her death in 2018.
John was a kind, gentle soul and never met a stranger. According to family lore, John was so precocious that when he was barely old enough to speak, he would shake hands with and introduce himself to everyone who passed him on the street. John was preceded in death by his parents, and his adored sister and sidekick, Amy Logan. He is survived by his stepmother Karen Logan; brothers Nelson Logan (Shelley) and Walt Logan; sister Lisa Logan Rich (James); nieces and nephews Mary Rich Dotson (David), Logan Rich (Maggie), Mallory Rich Mackin (Brian), Savannah Logan, Will Logan, and Gracie Logan; his close friend Marci Carnley; and many family members and precious friends.
