John Carter Kelley of Coffee Springs passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Wiregrass Medical Center in Geneva.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Searcy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hubert McWaters and Rev. Sonny Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 to 7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to: #664 Masonic Lodge, Chancellor, AL 36316.
Mr. Kelley was born August 2, 1923 in Geneva County and lived most of his life there. He served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He retired from Fort Rucker Civil Service after 35 years. He was a devoted Master Mason for 68 years and belonged to #664 Masonic Lodge in Chancellor. He was a very influential and devoted person of the Coffee Springs School System. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Coffee Springs.
Mr. Kelley was preceded in death by his parents, Mack Chester and Bessie Emma Carter Kelley; brother, James (Jim) Kelley; sister Maxine Kelley Jones Culverth; son, Danny Mack Kelley; and son-in-law, Jerry Ray Sweitzer.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth McWaters Kelley; daughter, Rhonda Sweitzer, Enterprise, AL; son, Michael Kelley (Teresa), Coffee Springs, AL; three grandchildren, Stephanie Sowle (Ted), Parkville, MO, Danny Kelley, Jr. (Ibolya), Knoxville, TN, John Kelley II (Carrie Anne), Oakridge, TN, Julie Weatherford (Eric), Oakridge, TN, and Michael Sweitzer (Amy), Versailles, KY; twelve great-grandchildren, Ella, Lily and Lila Sowle, Owen, Lane and Lorelei Sweitzer, Nicholas, Hunter and Josephine Kelley, Esther and Ursula Weatherford, and Julian Kelley; two brothers, Joel Kelley, Jacksonville, FL, Mickey Kelley, Coffee Springs, AL; brother-in-law, Harlan McWaters; sisters-in-law, Doris Miller, Geneva, AL, Nell Kelley (Jim), Waterloo, IN; several nieces and nephews.
