The Legend of Red Panda among us has concluded, but he has left us with stories as grand as Pecos Bill, John Bunyan, and Davy Crockett. J.D. was a man of uncommon courage, loyalty, adventure and fantastic fun. He was a snake-handling, gator-diving, mudbogging, world-traveling, freedom-fighting, oil-riggin’, family-loving hero. Never at a loss for words, he entertained millions with true-life stories of bravado, colorful happenstance, and unbelievable outings.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the family farm on Easy Street (8450 State Hwy 27 North, Chancellor, AL 36316) with Reverend Dr. Anna Crews Camphouse and Rev. Kit Johnson officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to any of the following charities in memory of J.D.:

The American Cancer Society: P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741

Legacy of Hope: 516 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35233

The American Legion, Donation Processing, P.O. Box 1954, Indianapolis, IN 46206

A larger-than-life character, he never met a stranger, loved practical jokes and quick-witted teasing, and had a special knack for making people feel better because of his help and humor. But beyond his adventurous spirit, J.D. was an Army Sergeant First Class, an Iraq war veteran, and a military leader. His dedication to his country and his role as a leader were integral parts of his life on earth. His heroism and selfless care for others continue even after his passing in his saving and improving four lives through his gift of organ donation.

J.D. was a devout man of the Christian faith, often choosing to minister to others through his generosity and service or conversations about God behind a pickup truck. Waiting for him on the other side of the veil are his grandmother Candy Crews and grandfather Paul Vaughan. Remaining on earth to continue his legacy are his wife, Kayla Crews; children, Lilly, Avee, and Oliver Crews; parents, J.C. and Paula Crews; sisters, Anna Crews Camphouse and Catherine Crews; grandmother, Ruth Vaughan; grandfather, Holland Crews; and a strong extended network of close friends and family of the heart.

He lived life to the fullest right up until he went on to heaven. While we will always miss him, we know that J.D. told us even in the hardest of times, “It’ll be just fine. It’ll be better than fine” because we know we will see him again. For his life among us and his ongoing life in heaven, we are eternally grateful.
