Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church with Revs. Johnny Fain and Bob Gross officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00-2:30 pm in the sanctuary. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, 300 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36303 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL, 36303.
Mr. Ross was born in Elba, Alabama to John David Ross and Jessie Morrow Ross. He spent his early years in Columbus, Georgia and was a graduate of Baker High School. He served in the Army as a military policeman during the Korean Conflict. He later moved to Dothan with Lance Inc. and was fondly known as “The Cracker Man” and retired after 35 years.
John met his one and only love, Pat, and they were married for over 58 years. His family was most important to him. He led by example and lived his life by these two quotes: “Two wrongs don’t make a right” and “Your word is your bond.” He loved hunting, fishing and playing bridge with his friends.
Mr. Ross’ love for First Baptist Church, Dothan, led him to sing in the Sanctuary Choir for over 43 years, to serve as deacon, and to be involved in various church committees throughout the years. In 2009, he humbly received the honor of “Deacon Emeritus.” He also worked with children and youth for many years and was active in missions.
Mr. Ross was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Edward Ross; and his sister, Alva Lee Grissett.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Linder Ross; two daughters, Ginger Ross and Beth Nowell (Mike); one son, Wesley Ross; three grandsons, Ross Nowell (Crystal), Andrew Nowell, Nathan Nowell; two great-grandsons, Sean Nowell and Aiden Nowell; two sisters, Willie Pearl Ellis and Mary Alice Shaw of Columbus, GA; many nephews and one niece.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Wesley Ross, Mike Nowell, Ross Nowell, Andrew Nowell, Nathan Nowell, Mickey Ellis, Frank Grissett and Mason Morrow. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the members of the First Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir-past and present.
Many thanks to Mr. Ross’ doctors and other medical personnel who cared for him over the years and to the staff of Covenant Hospice – especially Amy, Bridget and Jessica.
