John "Freddie" Sumter was born April 16, 1934 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Moses Scott and Mary Sumter.



Freddie transitioned from this life on April 19, 2016, to be present with the Lord.



He graduated from South Carolina county schools in which Journalism was his primary focus.  At the age of 21, he joined the United States Army. During his tours in the military he served two tour in Vietnam in which he earned several prestigious medals Silver and Bronze.  He retired January 31, 1984, after 27 years and 6 months.  Still young at heart, he served the city and patrons of Ozark, Alabama at the Ozark Post Office in the role of Letter Carrier.  He retired yet again in 2009.



John enjoyed spending time with his family. His passion was early morning and late night fishing and gardening.



Freddie leaves to cherish her memory his wife of fifty-eight years, Mae Frances Sumter. Their union of love presented six children, Robert (Gwendolyn) Sumter, San Antonio, TX, Katherine (Curtis) Scruggs, Bertha, AL, Carver (Evelyn) Sumter, Memphis, TN, Israel (Eva) Sumter, San Antonio, TX, Sheila (Eugene) Grant, Alabaster, AL, Natasha (Steven) Wright, Stafford, VA. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren: Kimberly Braxton, Ricky Pugh, Shemika (Jerry) Spencer, Stephanie (Ndanaan) Gorre-Ndiaye, Benjamin (Alyssa) Sumter, Anton (Stephanie) Sumter, Kristopher (Jessica) Sumter, Tiffanie Sumter, Kristofer Pugh, Brian Scruggs, Tameka Sumter, Kevin King, Justin Vanquez Thomas, Kayla King, Kiersten Sumter, Juan Lopez, Isaiah Lopez, Zamara Lopez, Kobe King, Kaliyah Grant, Ashara Sumter, Katilyn Grant, Kaehs McClure and Dominic Wright. Sixteen great grandchildren with the seventeenth due in September of this year.



Freddie is preceded in death by his parents, a brother (Israel Eugene), three sisters (Martha, Mary and Thelma) all of South Carolina.
