John G. Riley
John G. Riley, 80, a resident of Dothan for nineteen years, died Saturday, February 27, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016 at St. Columba Catholic Church Chapel with Reverend Patrick Gallagher officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Social Service, 557 W Main St, Dothan, AL 36301 and Hospice Advantage, 3245 Montgomery Hwy Suite 8, Dothan, AL 36303.
Mr. Riley was born January 14, 1936 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He graduated from Balboa High School, Canal Zone in 1954 and joined the Navy in June 1956. He attended colleges in Texas and Mississippi, and Canal Zone College and received his Associates degree in 1960. Mr. Riley worked for the Balboa Post Office and Balboa Customs Office.
Mr. Riley was catholic by faith. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club 1414 (55 years) and a member of Panama Canal Society. He hosted the John Riley Golf Tournament for many years. He enjoyed traveling and recreational swimming.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Emily Riley and his brother-in-law, Charles Newbury.
Survivors include his wife, Paula Riley of Dothan; son, Patrick Riley of Birmingham; daughter, Dayanna Riley of Southampton, NJ; four grandchildren, Delaney, Kinley, Tyler and Melody; brother, William B. Riley of Medford, MA; sister, Emily J. Newbury of Dothan; and several nieces and nephews.
