Mr. John Henry Hodges, Jr., 85, resident of Dothan, AL, passed away at Flowers Hospital on May 19 after a brief illness.
The visitation is from 1pm until 2pm Wednesday, May 23 and the funeral will begin at 2pm in the chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 1700 Barrington Road, Dothan, AL with Rev. Freddie McCain officiating. Full military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park and burial will be held in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 6200 US HWY 431 N, Dothan, AL.
Mr. Hodges was born July 9, 1932 in Houston County Alabama, the son of the late John Henry and Vassie (Mixon) Hodges, Sr. of Taylor. He was born on his Dad’s 50th birthday. He grew up in the Taylor Community. He was an Army and Air Force Veteran having served over 41 years in the active military and Alabama Air National Guard. He served in many capacities in the 115th Air Control Squadron during 1953 – 1986 and served as Squadron Commander from January 1986 through his retirement in November 1991.
He graduated from Rehobeth High School in 1950 and attended George C. Wallace Community College and University of Alabama Center.
John was a member of Northside Methodist Church where he had formerly served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, Church Lay Leader, Northside Academy School Board, and various other committees. In addition, he formally served on the Board of Directors at Wiregrass Federal Credit Union, where he was Chairman during 1993 – 1994. He served on the Veteran Affairs Committee of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Dothan Elks Lodge 1887.
He was the beloved husband of the late Margarite Sharron Hodges and was preceded in death by three sisters and brothers-in-laws, Alma Hodges Rice (Alf), Addie Hodges Rice (Curt) and Judy Vaudean Armentrout (Grover), all of Rehobeth and several nieces and nephews. He was also recently preceded in death by son-in-law, Jim Baynes.
Survivors include his two daughters, Sharon Kaye Hodges Burk (George) and Lisa Kim Hodges Baynes, two granddaughters, Tiffany English Little (Charles) and Jessica Margarite Baynes, two great grandsons, William Hodges Milner and Cooper Samuel Milner, two step grandchildren, Katherine and Daniel Little, a niece, Beverlye Armentrout Hinson, a nephew, Joe Rice (Peggy) and several cousins, great nieces and nephews. And two very special friends and caregivers, E. J. Johnson and Joanna Caster.
