Mr. John (Johnny) A. Hughes, Jr., age 87 died, Thursday, February 18, 2016 at his home in Hartford, Alabama.


 


The funeral will be held Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 3:00 p.m., at the Hartford First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Jean Spikes and the Reverend John Wesley Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in the City of Hartford Cemetery, with Bottoms Garden Chapel Funeral Home directing.


 


The family will receive friends Saturday, February 20, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until the service begins at the Hartford First United Methodist Church, in Hartford, Alabama.


 


Johnny graduated from Geneva County High School in 1947 and attended Auburn University. He was employed with the First National Bank of Hartford in 1953 as served as a Director of the bank since 1958: as Assistant Cashier from 1958 until 1962; as Vice President from 1963 until 1967; as President from 1968 until 1984; as Chief Executive Officer from 1984 until 2004 and as Chairman of the Board from 1984 until 2013. During his association with the First National Bank of Hartford, the bank grew tremendously, due in large part; to his leadership, direction, and foresight. Mr. Hughes was the Chairman of the First Hartford Bancshares, Inc. at the time of his death.


 


Johnny was the Mayor of the City of Hartford for 25 years. In recognition of his distinguished service to the community, the Johnny Hughes Community Center was named in his honor. He served his country in the Alabama National Guard for 18 years obtaining the rank of Captain, and was the Company Commander when the Hartford Unit was mobilized during the Berlin crisis and also active duty during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hughes was a former member of the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission, the Hartford Planning Commission, the Geneva County Gas District, the Hartford Lion’s Club and the Geneva County High School Athletic Club. He was an active member of the Hartford First United Methodist Church, and had served on its Administrative Board.


 


Johnny received a Resolution commending him for his distinguished service to the City of Hartford from the Senate of the State of Alabama, and was honored at the Geneva County Farm City Week 2014 with the Geneva County Robert Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award.


 


Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, John Albert Hughes, Sr., and Lovie Dell Childs Hughes; a brother and sister-in-law, Jessie E. (Gene) Hughes and Betty Rhodes Hughes; a sister-in-law, Janet Jones Hughes; a nephew, John Gregory (Greg) Hughes and a great nephew, Brantley Brooks Murdock.


 


Johnny is survived by his wife, Opal Whittle Hughes; brother, Bill C. Hughes and Joyce Hughes of Hartford, Alabama; brother, H.J. (Jack) Hughes of Hartford, Alabama; step-daughter, Debbie Shehee of Bellwood, Alabama; step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Joe and Wendy Shehee of Hartford, Alabama; step-grand-daughters, Brittany Shehee and Lacey Shehee of Hartford, Alabama; sister-in-law, Hazel Jones of Hartford, Alabama; brother-in-law, Charles and Jonella Whittle of Orlando, Florida; niece, Amy Hughes Bromberg and John Bromberg of Birmingham, Alabama, niece, Susan K. Hughes of Hartford, Alabama; nephew, John Jackson (J.J.) and Tammy Hughes; great-niece and great-nephew, Alexandria Leigh Hughes and John Jackson Hughes, III of Hartford, Alabama; niece, Virginia Dell Hughes Murdock and Randall Murdock; great-nephews, Jesse and Parker Murdock of Prattville, Alabama; and niece, Leslie Ann Hughes of Portland, Oregon.


 


Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Hartford First United Methodist Church, 205 South 3rd Avenue, Hartford, Alabama 36344.


 


Johnny was an avid golfer who enjoyed 6 holes in 1 but was more proud of his “double eagle”. Johnny was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.


 


Pallbearers: Joe Shehee, Charles Whittle, Anderson Fulford, Robert Earl Payne, Jimmy Miller and Jimmy Bottoms. Honorary Pallbearers: Directors, Officers and Employees of the First National Bank of Hartford.
