John Louis Schamp

 

John Louis Schamp, a resident of Dothan, died early Saturday morning, March 7, 2015 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 91.

The family will receive friends at Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street from 1:30-2:30 on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. John Sanders officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Greystone United Methodist Church, 4401 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36305.

Mr. Schamp was born August 17, 1923 in Bonilla, South Dakota. He served in the Army Air Forces from 1941-1945 before retiring as Sergeant. He was proud to have worked on the Enola Gay during his military career. Mr. Schamp retired from the Alabama Department of Revenue and Mack Electric Company. He was a longtime member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, now Greystone United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ann Kirkland Schamp, a son, Jerre Mack Schamp, a sister, Lyda Kuhns, a brother, Russell Schamp and his parents, Joseph and Dorothy Schamp.

Survivors include his son, Robert Schamp (Wanda) of Dothan; granddaughters, Kimberly Williams (Eric) of Phoenix City, Stephanie Dubose (Jason) of Dothan; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Wooten, Tori Wooten, Robert Williams, Sara Beth Williams and Andrew Williams; three sisters, Melba Gallagher (Cam), Juanita (Don) and Beth Flieche of South Dakota and a brother, Darrell Schamp of Montana.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Steve Kirkland, Mark Kirkland, Kenneth Kirkland, Tracy Kirkland, Jason Dubose and his great-grandson, Robert Williams.
