HEADLAND. .John Marvette Marshall, a resident of the Hebron Community of Henry County, died Friday afternoon, January 1, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was 92.


            Mr. Marshall’s life will be celebrated at a funeral service to be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016, in the Hebron Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Brantley, Rev. Ted Forrester and Rev. John Baxter officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.  The family will receive friends 2:30 until 4:30 p.m., Sunday, at the mortuary in Headland.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hebron Baptist Church, c/o Edwin Glover, 6952 State Hwy. 134E, Columbia, AL 36319; or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.


            Mr. Marshall was a lifelong resident of the Hebron Community, son of the late John Wesley Marshall and Addie Mae Armstrong Marshall.  He attended Hebron School and graduated from Headland High School.  He married Ruth Granberry, also of the Hebron Community, in 1944; and soon after, Mr. Marshall joined the U. S. Army.  He proudly served his country during World War II where he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star.  Mr. Marshall was a lifelong member of the Hebron Baptist Church.  He was engaged in farming for 42 years, retiring in 1988.  Mr. Marshall was a member of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association and the Alabama Peanut Producer’s Association.  He was a founding member of the Headland Peanut Co-op where he served as a Director for 31 years.  Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by a grandson, James Ryan Darnell; a sister, Ruth Saunders; and two brothers,  Rudolph Marshall and  Frank Marshall.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of 71 years, Ruth G. Marshall; two daughters, Gayle Scales (Rick), Dothan, and Vickie Granberry (Frank); a son, Jack Marshall (Lisa), Headland; two sisters, Marie Trawick (Bud), Cottonwood; and Ann Armstrong, Headland; eight grandchildren,  Shane Scales (Michelle), Chad Granberry (Savannah), Dustin Granberry (Beth), Blake Smith (Ashley), Amanda Fergus (Matt), Amy Cochrane (Paul), Adam Marshall (Amber); and Brooke Ward (Dustin); nine great-grandchildren, Ben, Kason, Addy, Jace, Kamden, Nolan, Will, Daxon, and Jezilyn.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Shane Scales, Adam Marshall, Chad Granberry, Dustin Granberry, Blake Smith, Earl G. Saunders, Greg Armstrong, and Marty Rushing; and in memoriam as an honorary pallbearer, Ryan Darnell.


            The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Russell Bedsole and his nurse, Candice Reneau; and also to caregivers, Sarah Davis, Jessica Burrs, and Rochelle McLeroy for the loving care and kindness shown during his illness.
