John enlisted in the Army when he was 15 years old. He was just a kid when he was sent to Japan during World War II. When he got out of the military, he spent his early years in Tennessee before settling in Dothan where he worked at Farley Nuclear Plant as a sheet metal foreman.  He was a Jehovah’s Witness and attended meetings at the Kingdom Hall: South Park Congregation and was a very active member witnessing, giving talks, Bible studies, and assisting his congregation wherever he couldHe called himself Jack of all trades, master of none, but he could fix, build, sew, or make just about anything. He was a kind man who would help anyone in need. In his spare time, he wrote stories, poems, and songs. He loved painting nature, especially his own flowers he grew in his garden, which he proudly took care of every spring. He had names for all the birds and squirrels that would visit his yard and he enjoyed being outside as much as possible. He would fix discarded lawn mowers and give them to those who could not afford one. He had a workshop where you could find him woodworking, fixing an engine, or doing repairs. He had every tool known to man, and made his own when he couldn’t find the exact one he needed. He spent many hours combing the aisles of Lowe’s and Ace Hardware for projects he was working onHe was a comedian and always had funny stories at a moment’s notice. He enjoyed eating at Denny’s and was known by the staff as “Sunshine” due to him always making them smile. He became a softy when his grandchildren were born, and he adored them. He loved playing games, peeling apples, and making sure he had cookies or ice cream sandwiches for when they would visit. He said that Kaliyah was his beauty, Kasidey was his scholar, and John Cooper was his “Copper Head.” He was married 25 years to his darlin’, Cherry Hamill. He became her full-time caregiver when she fell ill until she passed away in 2000.
