ABBEVILLE. . .John Robert Benefield, a resident of Abbeville, died Saturday afternoon, February 14, 2015, in a Dothan hospital. He was 71.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 16, 2015, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Matthew C. Helms and Pastor Ronnie Benefield officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Abbeville.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, P.O Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302.
Mr. Benefield was born and reared in Barbour County, son of the late Robert Bennett Benefield and Mary Frances White Benefield. He was a 1961 graduate of Eufaula High School and served his country in the Army National Guard in the Eufaula unit. Mr. Benefield lived in Eufaula most of his adult lifetime before moving to Abbeville in 1999. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Eufaula and formerly served as President of the Local 357, United Brick and Clay Workers. Mr. Benefield was formerly employed by A. P. Green Refractories in Baker Hill. In later years, he sold used cars and was involved in land development. Mr. Benefield was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Charles Benefield and James Reid Benefield.
Surviving relatives include his wife of forty-six years, Betty Smith Benefield, Abbeville; a son, Jeff Benefield (Lori), Eufaula; three sisters, Mary Brown (Bill), Ozark; Sheila Nolin (Sammy), and Jackie Herring (Bodie), all of Eufaula; three step-grandchildren, Kayle Williams, Gracie Williams, and Jaxon Williams; a sister-in-law, Janice Smith Oliver, Dothan; several nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Billy Benefield, Bennett Ward, Brock Nolin, Christopher Herring, Corey Smith, and Randy Glass.
