John was born April 16, 1925, in Duluth, Minnesota, to the late Raymond and Hattie Duhaime and was raised on a farm in Iowa. He joined the army at 17 during WWII and fought with the 101st Airborne and 82nd Airborne. He retired as a First Sergeant in 1967, with 24 years of service, and immediately started teaching Junior ROTC at Enterprise High School. He was the first JROTC instructor at Enterprise High School, and coached the Rifle Team for 18 years with multiple Alabama State Championships and 6 National Championships. He retired from Enterprise High School in 1985 with 18 years as an instructor. He and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, moved to the Bethany area where he enjoyed sharing the strawberries and other produce from his organic garden. He had a great love for fishing, especially salt water fishing, and is legendary in his experience and knowledge of catching speckle trout and red fish. His greatest joy, more than gardening and fishing, was his love for his wife and sons and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth Duhaime, and his brother, Dale Duhaime, preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sons: Ronnie Duhaime (Bennie) of Enterprise, Jimmy Duhaime (Linda) of Enterprise, and John Duhaime (Kay) of Pell City; six grandchildren: Eric Duhaime (Erica) of Newton, Amy Watson (Norris) of Montgomery, Brian Duhaime of Enterprise, Emily Hammock (Chris) of Nashville, TN, Brandi Waid (Kurt) of Enterprise, and Blake Duhaime of Birmingham; seven great-grandchildren.
