HEADLAND. . .John S. (Johnny) Popwell, a resident of Headland, died Monday night, September 8, 2014, at his home. He was 80.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, September 10, 2014, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Phil Collins and a son, Sammy Popwell officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P.M. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302.
Mr. Popwell was born and reared in Midland City, son of the late Eddie Columbus Popwell and Nancy Era Baldwin Popwell. He served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Popwell lived in Midland City most of his adult lifetime before moving to the Blackwood Community of Dale County over thirty years ago. He was a member of the Blackwood Church. Mr. Popwell was retired as the owner and operator of Dale Sheet Metal Company. In earlier years, he was employed by Smith’s Inc. in Dothan. Mr. Popwell was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Samantha Popwell, and two sisters, Myrtis Griggs, and Marie Azar.
Surviving relatives include his wife of fifty-eight years, Martha Sweatt Popwell, Headland; two sons, Sammy Popwell (Melanie), Dothan; and James Popwell (Cindy), Headland; four grandchildren, Blake Popwell (Kristina), Ben Popwell, Shelby Popwell, and Hannah Popwell; six great-grandchildren, Avie, Eliza, Dylan, Kevin, Michael, and Chelsea.
Serving as active pallbearers will be David Bowers, David Sweatt, Dewayne Kennedy, Robert Brown, Joe Armstrong, and Rene Azar.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Popwell during his illness.
