ABBEVILLE. . .John Thomas “Buddy” Bates, Jr., a resident of Abbeville, died early Friday evening, October 15, 2021, in a Dothan hospital. He was 76.


       Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A. M. Monday, October 18, 2021, in the Judson Baptist Church with Reverend Brandon Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30  A.M. Monday in the church sanctuary.  Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be observed.


       Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302 or to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36311.


       Mr. Bates was born in Washington, North Carolina and was reared in Orlando, Florida, son of the late John Thomas Bates, Sr. and Kathleen Sheppard Bates.  He lived in Orlando for many years before moving to Thomas Mill Creek in Henry County in 1991. Mr. Bates retired as a Foreman with the Orlando Utilities Commission. After retirement, he and his wife owned and operated Buddy’s Corner on Thomas Mill Creek. Mr. Bates was a member of the Judson Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Stewart and Dot Knopp.


       Surviving relatives include his wife, Sharon Westbrook Bates, a daughter, Stacey Scott (Dwight); two sons, David Bates and Matt Bates, all of Abbeville; a sister, Martha Rushing, Eufaula; four grandchildren, J. D. Bates, Caleb Tarver, K’Lee Tarver and Cyrus Bates.
