John Wells Rodenbough, MD died peacefully on July 14 in the SAMC Palliative Care Unit with loving family at his side. He was 79.


 


Born in Atlanta, Georgia, October 27, 1938, he grew up in Dothan from childhood and graduated from Dothan High School and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He was a member of ATO social fraternity and received academic honors as a Phi Beta Kappa. He studied medicine at the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the highest academic honor in medical school. He began his pathology residency at UAB, before deployment as a Lieutenant Commander and Medical Officer for the US Navy aboard the USS Arlington in the Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam conflict, and completed training as Chief Resident in Pathology at University of California San Diego following his military service. He served as a Pathologist at SAMC for twelve years after practicing in Montgomery, Alabama.


 


He was the son of the late Martha Morton Rodenbough and Albert Churchman Rodenbough II of Dothan. Survivors include his sister, Nancy Rodenbough Jones (Patrick), nephew Patrick B Jones III (Darlene) of Dothan, niece Shannon Jones Russell (Bruce) of Bethseda, MD, and nephew Dr. Thomas Rodenbough Jones (Teri) of Charlotte, NC and numerous grand-and great-grand nieces and nephews.


 


A memorial service will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 with visitation starting at 10 AM with services to follow at 11 AM with the Reverend Clark Cornelius of Grace Anglican Church officiating. He will be buried next to his parents at Memory Hill Cemetery following the service.


 


The family would like to thank the staff at SAMC for providing devoted and compassionate care during his terminal illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Grace Anglican Church c/o 113 Gloster Court, Dothan, AL  36303.
